The Language of Worship

IMG_0564

Last weekend was the first weekend we were able to go to church. In true Thai style, the church service has been cancelled or has changed times every weekend {including this weekend}. But last Sunday, the service actually happened. It was beautiful. The church we attended met in a tiny room that fit about 60 people. {60 Christians- out of a city of 100,000 people. there are temples and mosques on every corner. I think we have seen 2 Christian churches total. heart breaking.} The main pastor spoke completely in Thai. Sadly, I did not understand a word he said- except for Amen. We start our Thai lessons this week, so hopefully we will be able to speak at least conversationally soon.

While I do not speak Thai yet, I do speak the language of worship. And goodness was it incredible. I literally stood in front of my seat struggling to keep the tears in. After weeks of speaking with Buddhists and watching them worship and leave sacrifices at alters, we finally got to witness almost 60 Thais lift up their hands in worship of our Heavenly Father. While I did not know most of the songs, my heart was encouraged to listen to the Thai’s make a joyful noise for the Lord. Eyes were closed, hands were lifted, hearts were open. The Lord was present. And to bring worship to a beautiful closing, we sang “How Great is our God” in Thai. I, of course, sang it in English. At this point I couldn’t stop the tears. It was too beautiful. Two cultures were together, in one room, worshiping the same God. Hallelujah! Then we came home and listened to our home church on our computer. It was the perfect start to our week. God is good!
