8 Ways to Survive a Long Flight While Pregnant

Over the course of this pregnancy, I’ve taken over 30 flights- including long flights from NYC to LA and long flights to Israel and Paris. On our last flight from Paris to NYC I was actually 31 weeks pregnant and rocking a full size bump. So needless to say, I’ve finally figured out the secret to surviving long flights while pregnant.

Over the past couple of weeks a few of you have reached out and asked for tips on how to survive a long flight while pregnant, so I thought I would share a few of my tips with you all!

  1. Baby aspirin. My doctor recommends pregnant women take 1 baby aspirin every night for a week prior to your flight, plus one right before your flight. This helps thin your blood and prevents blood clotting.
  2. Bring a water bottle. Flying is dehydrating and being pregnant you need to drink a plethora of water. So add the two together and you really need to up your water intake. I highly recommend bringing an empty water bottle like this one with you through security and filling it up before you get on your flight.
  3. Bring snacks. Think low sodium to reduce swelling! Both pregnancy and flying can cause you to swell, so cut the salt while flying. Think unsalted nuts, fruit (clementines, bananas, apples), hard boiled eggs, etc. Not all flights offer snacks and pregnant women should be giving ourselves & our babies fuel.
  4. Walk. Get up and walk the isles ever hour to hour and a half. If you are drinking a ton of water, you will likely have to go to the bathroom frequently anyways. I always just add an extra lap onto my trip to the bathroom to get my blood pumping a bit.
  5. Wear black. I love traveling in these leggings and this black top. Not only is black always chic and an easy go-to, but it also helps hide any leakage. I usually just throw on a scarf for both color & to use as a blanket on the plane.
  6. Avoid red eye flights. Unless you are flying in business class or first class. My doctor said I didn’t need to get up and walk every hour or so if I had a legit lay-down bed. For my red eye flight to Israel I did have a lay-down bed and it was magical! But for our flight from Paris I sat coach. Luckily our flight wasn’t red eye and I simply enjoyed watching movies and read books.
  7. Rolling carry on bag. When pregnant you shouldn’t be carrying anything heavy, so stick to rolling suitcases and ask a neighbor, your flying buddy or whomever you see to help you lift your bag into the overhead bin. I adore my iFly carry on bag and couldn’t recommend it more!
  8. Keep your insurance, doctors information & any medical issues on a paper with you. You never know
what can happen, so always keep important contacts and information with you. I found blood in my urine while in Paris and freaked out! Luckily, thanks to WiFi calling, I was able to use my iPhone free of charge to call my doctor in NYC. Turns out it was just an overactive baby jumping on my bladder- but it was comforting to find out.

location:
Hotel Napoleon Paris
if you are coming to Paris, you must at least think about staying at the Hotel Napoleon Paris. This gorgeous 5 star boutique hotel is located right by the Arc de Triomphe {as seen in some photos} and has views of the Eiffel Tower. I’ll be sharing more about the hotel soon! But needless to say, we WILL come back here once our bébé is born!
