Where to Eat in Amsterdam

We learned a few interesting things about eating in Amsterdam. One, hotel restaurants are actually fabulous- you don’t eat there simply out of convenience. Multiple locals told us to eat at various hotels. Second, a lot of restaurants do prefixed meals and often times you don’t get a menu. You eat what the chef specializes in and rather than choosing what you eat, you choose how many courses you want. If you have no dietary restrictions- I cannot recommend this experience enough. It is a foodies heaven!

Almost everywhere we ate in Amsterdam was based on a local’s suggestion. I’ve also included a few suggestions that we didn’t make it to, but hope to when we return. I put an * next to the restaurants I personally would prioritize, but all of the restaurants below are worth visiting if you have time!

  1. Americano Bar & Kitchen : {Italian} Good, New York style Italian food for when you need some comfort food. We didn’t make it here since we are from NYC, but thought it was a fun option!
  2. Balthazar’s Keuken : {Italian} Great cuisine with vintage decor. The menu is limited so the chef can specialize in each dish.
  3. Café De Klepel : {French} Considered one of the best gastropubs in Amsterdam, with a changing three-course menu.
  4. Café Modern : {European} I love places with a story and this old bank is now a restaurant with a seasonal restaurant.
  5. *Choux : {Dutch} Recommended by a few locals. Incredible food with a beautiful presentation. And they have a plethora of options- including vegetarian and gluten free.
  6. Daalder : {Dutch} Recommended by a few locals. Cozy atmosphere & delicious 4-7 course meals. This is a foodies delight, as there is no menu and the chef specializes in his meals. The chef can accommodate eating restrictions.
  7. *Dutch Delicacy : {Dutch} We went here for a quick afternoon pick me up. They have everything from delicious breads and cheese to sandwiches, beers and more. Go to the back for views of the canals while you relax & much.
  8. Gin Neo Bistro & Wines : {Dutch/French} Good wines and food with a story. The chef was originally a sommelier.
  9. Guts & Glory :  {European} Recommended by a local. I love that they change their menu with each season.
  10. Hotel De Goudfazant : {Dutch} We didn’t make it here, but I wish we had! The restaurant is in an old factory building and the food is supposed to be great.
  11. Pressroom :: {Dutch} The food & ambience are wonderful! Located in the Ink Hotel, but it was filled with locals.
  12. Kaagman & Kortekaas : {Dutch} High quality doing in a bistro setting. We couldn’t get in, but it looks great!
  13. Morgan & Mees : {Dutch} This hotel restaurant deserves to be noted. Come here for drinks and a good meal!
  14. Mos : Great views over the IF & Amsterdam North.
  15. *Panache : Plan to stay stay a while after dinner for drinks. This restaurant has great atmosphere.
  16. *Pancakes! Amsterdam :  Dutch Pancakes meet French Crepes for these sweet or savory dishes! And it is in the Jordaan neighborhood, which is my favorite.
  17. Rijsel : {Dutch/French} Traditional dishes with a French twist.
  18. *Restaurant Breda : {Dutch} A neobistro with gorgeous food & wines. 3-5 course options.
  19. Salmuera : If you are a big meat eater, go here. Specifically note the good Argentinian steak, ceviche and cocktails.
  20. Sinne :{Dutch}  A good, affordable Michelin-starred restaurant.
  21. Toscanini : {Italian} Apparently, this is one of the cities best Italian restaurants. We couldn’t get in, as we did make reservations in a advance.
  22. Wilde Zwijnen : {Dutch} Delicious, seasonal food, but again be prepared for no menu and for the chef to serve you what he specializes in!
  23. Worst Wijncafé :: {Wine Bar} A great wine bar in my favorite neighborhood. They also have an impressive meat selection.

Bars worth visiting:
Brouwerij ‘T IJ :: Located in a windmill- need I say more. Come here for a beer & a tour!

I want to go to Amsterdam so bad! My boyfriend is Dutch, so I’m used to all the yummy foods. Next step is visiting Holland and seeing all these beautiful canals for myself!
