10 Best Day Trips from Nice, France

We loved the city of Nice, but one of my favorite things about Nice is the proximity to the rest of the French Riviera! With its central location and excellent train and ferry connections, you can wake up in Nice, spend the day wandering another dreamy coastal town, and be back in time for dinner!

We did 6 day trips from Nice, but we also considered visiting 4 other cities. After much research, here are 10 best day trips from Nice!

1. Villefranche sur Mer

Villefranche sur Mer immediately stole my heart. Just 10 minutes from Nice by train, this colorful harbor town feels like stepping into a postcard. The sandy beach has calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming, and the pastel buildings along the waterfront make for stunning photos. Stroll through the Old Town, enjoy lunch by the sea, and soak in the relaxed, small-town vibe. We loved this city so much we actually went three times (one full day, one half day, and one evening).

2. Eze

Perched high on a hill between Nice and Monaco, Eze is a medieval village with winding cobblestone streets, art galleries, and breathtaking views. I didn’t originally build Eze into our itinerary, as I wasn’t sure if our boys could do the hike. But multiple people told us it was a must- and I’m SO glad we did it! Also, don’t miss the Jardin Exotique for panoramic views. You can actually buy your tickets to the garden in advance (which I highly suggest you do). If you’re able to, I also HIGHLY recommend doing the hike from the train station. Our 4 & 7 year old did it, so you can too! And the waterfall is a gorgeous stop along the way up!

3. Monaco

A glamorous blend of old-world elegance and modern luxury, Monaco is just a 20-minute train ride from Nice. Visit the Prince’s Palace, watch the changing of the guard, explore the famous Monte Carlo Casino, and wander the yacht-filled marina. Even if you’re not there to gamble, it’s worth visiting for the beauty and unique atmosphere. If you’re a member of a Yacht Club, see if your club reciprocates. We were able to arrange this in advance and we enjoyed lunch at the Yacht Club de Monaco- it was an incredible experience! Also, the gardens are all stunning!

4. Menton

Known as the “Pearl of France,” Menton sits right on the Italian border and is famous for its pastel buildings, citrus trees, and sunny microclimate. Stroll the Old Town, relax on sandy beaches, and enjoy the perfect blend of French and Italian cuisine. If you visit in February, the annual Lemon Festival is a must-see. We really loved this city!

5. Cannes

Cannes almost didn’t make it on our list for this trip, but I’m glad we ended up making it here! The Cannes Film Festival has actually been on my bucket list for years, and while we didn’t get to experience it this year- I know we’ll make it back. Cannes has gorgeous sandy beaches (a rarity on the Riviera), upscale shopping, and a lively promenade lined with palm trees. You can spend the day exploring La Croisette, visiting the Old Port, getting lost meandering the old roads, or taking a ferry to the peaceful Lérins Islands for a quiet escape.

6. Saint-Tropez

Though a bit farther from Nice (best reached by boat or car), Saint-Tropez is worth the trip. We decided to take a boat over, as we are boat people and love spending time on the water. And I’m so glad we did! The views were stunning and we even got to watch a sail regatta! Saint Tropez used to be a quiet fishing village, but it’s now a glamorous hotspot with luxury boutiques, iconic beach clubs, and a charming Old Port. You should note- the beach clubs are not walking distance from the old town, but they are a quick taxi ride away. Saint Tropez is a classically gorgeous town with some of the most beautiful water and delicious food in the Riviera! But it definitely felt like a tourist destination.

7. Anitbes

Disclaimer- we didn’t make it here this trip. But from my research, I learned this is a charming seaside town with a blend of history and beach life. Antibes is home to the Picasso Museum, a bustling Provençal market, and beautiful sandy coves. The Old Town is perfect for wandering, and the marina is filled with luxury yachts to admire.

8. Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Disclaimer- we didn’t make it here this trip. But from my research, this is one of the most picturesque hilltop villages in France, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a haven for art lovers. The narrow streets are filled with galleries, boutiques, and cafés. The views of the surrounding countryside are breathtaking, and the village has a timeless, romantic feel.

9. Grasse

Disclaimer- we didn’t make it here this trip. But Grasse is known as the perfume capital of the world. Here you can visit perfume factories, stroll through flower-filled gardens, and explore the medieval Old Town. If you love scent and history, you’ll be in heaven here.

10. Cap-Ferrat

Disclaimer- we didn’t spent time here this trip. But Cap-Ferrat is a luxurious peninsula just a short drive from Nice. Cap-Ferrat is known for its stunning coastal walks, hidden beaches, and the magnificent Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Some say the villa’s gardens alone are worth the trip — each section is designed in a different style and offers incredible sea views.

Pro Tip– Start your day early to make the most of your time — as many of these destinations get hot and busy by the end of the day! Especially during peak season. And be sure to bring/wear a swimsuit if you plan on beach stops!

Ughhh, this list is dangerously inspiring — like, how am I supposed to pick just one when every place looks straight out of a dream?! Èze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence are calling my name with those cosy vibes and stunning views. Honestly, this post has me itching to book a ticket and just spend a week hopping around in sun-soaked bliss.

Èze is wonderful – your tip about the views from the Nietzsche Path makes me want to go back and try it properly next time.
Also I can tell you that Antibes and Saint-Paul-de-Vence are absolutely amazing, highly recommended.
