There is nothing quite like the excitement of boarding a flight to Europe or another destination you have been dreaming about. The overnight flight required to get there, however, can feel considerably less glamorous.
Long flights are cold, dry, noisy and rarely comfortable, especially when I am also keeping track of everything my family may need. Over time, I have learned that the right products really do make a difference. These are the long-haul flight essentials I highly recommend for making an overnight flight feel more comfortable, organized and relaxing.

For Actually Getting Comfortable
1. Trtl Travel Pillow
I have tried the traditional neck pillows, and most of them never give me the support I am hoping for. The Trtl Travel Pillow is structured more like a soft neck wrap, so it helps keep your head from falling forward the moment you begin to drift off. It is lightweight, compact and one of the first things I would add to a long-flight packing list.
2. Two-in-One Travel Blanket and Pillow
Airplane cabins always seem to become cold as soon as the lights go down. This travel blanket folds into its own pouch, doubles as a pillow and attaches to a suitcase, so it adds comfort without becoming one more bulky thing to carry. I love any product that does two jobs well, and this is one I would use throughout the entire flight.
3. Blackout Sleep Mask
Between glowing screens, reading lights and a neighbor who opens the window shade at the wrong moment, sleeping on a plane can be difficult. This contoured blackout mask blocks the light without pressing against your eyelids. Pair it with the travel pillow and blanket, and your seat instantly feels a little more restful.
4. Loop Quiet Earplugs
The engine noise never completely disappears, even on a quiet overnight flight. Loop Quiet earplugs help soften the background noise and are comfortable enough to wear while resting. They are also wonderful to have for hotels, trains and any other noisy moments during a trip.
5. Compression Socks
These are not the most glamorous item in my personal bag, but they may be one of the most practical. Compression socks help my legs and feet feel more comfortable during hours of sitting. I put them on before boarding so I do not have to wrestle with them in an airplane bathroom.
6. Airplane Foot Hammock
If your feet do not rest comfortably on the floor, a foot hammock can make a surprisingly big difference. It loops over the tray-table arms and gives your feet a place to rest, helping you shift positions and take some pressure off your lower back. It is a small, affordable item that can solve a very specific and very annoying long-flight problem.
For Entertainment and Staying Charged
7. AirFly
The AirFly is one of those tiny gadgets you will wonder how you traveled without. It connects your Bluetooth headphones or AirPods to the airplane entertainment system, so you can watch a movie using headphones you already find comfortable. No tangled cord and no flimsy airline earbuds.
8. Portable Power Bank
I never rely entirely on an airplane outlet. Sometimes it works, sometimes it charges painfully slowly and sometimes it does not work at all. A high-capacity portable charger keeps phones, tablets and headphones powered through the flight and into the first part of your arrival day.
Keep portable chargers in your carry-on, and always confirm your airline’s current battery rules before you fly.
9. Electronics Organizer
When everyone needs a different charger at the same time, an electronics organizer keeps the situation from becoming complete chaos. I use one place for cables, adapters, earbuds, the AirFly and other small tech. Instead of emptying my entire tote into my lap, I can reach for one pouch and find exactly what I need.
For Feeling Fresh When You Land
10. Wet Ones Travel Packs
I always want wipes within reach on a flight. Wet Ones travel packs are perfect for tray tables, armrests, sticky hands and all the little messes that seem to happen while traveling. The slim packs barely take up any room, so this is an easy add-to-cart item that you will be glad you packed.
11. Liquid I.V. Hydration Packets
Airplane cabins are incredibly dry, and I feel so much better when I stay intentional about hydration. I tuck a few Liquid I.V. packets into my personal item and add one to a bottle of water after security or during the flight. They are especially helpful on a long travel day when you want to arrive feeling more like yourself.
12. Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm
Dry airplane air is not kind to lips, which is why I keep Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm close throughout the flight. It feels hydrating and a little luxurious, and it is one of those small comforts that makes an overnight flight feel more civilized. Keep it in your liquids bag for security, then move it somewhere easy to reach after boarding.
13. Colgate Wisp Disposable Toothbrushes
Brushing your teeth before trying to sleep or just before landing makes an enormous difference. Colgate Wisps are individually sized, waterless and easy to use without unpacking your entire toiletry bag in a tiny airplane bathroom. They are also perfect for long connections and travel days that stretch much longer than expected.
How I Pack Everything
The secret is not just bringing the right products. It is being able to find them without unpacking your entire bag at 35,000 feet.
I divide everything into three simple groups:
- Sleep and comfort: Trtl pillow, travel blanket, sleep mask, earplugs, compression socks and foot hammock
- Tech: AirFly, portable charger, cables and electronics organizer
- Freshen up: Wet Ones, Liquid I.V., lip balm and Colgate Wisps
Once I board, I pull out the few things I know I will use right away and place the rest near the top of my personal item. A little organization before takeoff makes the whole flight feel easier.
A long-haul flight may never feel exactly like home, but it can be significantly more comfortable. Every item on this list solves a real in-flight problem, whether it is cold cabin air, a dying phone, tangled chargers or simply wanting to feel refreshed before landing.
If you have an overnight or international flight coming up, I recommend preparing your personal item now instead of waiting until the night before. Future you will be very grateful when the cabin lights dim.
