All Things Baby Feeding :: Baby Foods, Favorite Feeding Items & Feeding Schedule

We blinked and our newborn turned 7 months old! How did that happen? Cayson was exclusively breastfed until 6 months and then we started introducing food. And let me tell you- it has been so fun watching Cayson explore new flavors and textures. He still hasn’t figured out the whole chewing thing, but he’s getting there.

Growing up my family spent hours around our table and family dinners were sacred. Caleb and I knew we wanted to make our table a cherished space as well. So we’ve been very intentional about our time with Cayson at the table. Each time I sit down to feed Cayson I make sure we sit at the table together for at least 30 minutes. Caleb and I love lingering at the table long after a meal is finished and we want Cayson to take part as well. We are slowly teaching him this is “normal.” If he starts getting fussy I’ll give him a kitchen towel to play with {which he LOVES for some odd reason ha} or if we are really desperate I’ll give him Sophie la Girafe. We try to keep toys away from the table, but who knows- as he grows older that may change. But for now we want to keep it simple. Caleb is also almost always home by 5 PM, so we have dinner as a family every night.

Foods We’ve Fed Cayson

We skipped the full purée phase & jumped straight to real foods. I’m trying to avoid anything too sweet to start and if he doesn’t seem to like a food I try serving it to him in a different form {hot, cold, mashed, pureed, etc}. In Bringing Up Bébé they have tons of great suggestions on feeding a baby!

  • Avocado :: Mashed with a fork
  • Beets :: Bake and cut them up into tiny little squares
  • Carrots :: Steamed and cut into tiny bites
  • Parsnips :: Steamed and cut into tiny bites
  • Broccoli :: Steamed and split into long sticks
  • Rainbow cauliflower :: Steamed and split into long sticks
  • Butternut squash :: Cut into strips and baked
  • Peas :: Mashed with a fork
  • Apples :: Cut into skinny sticks
  • Black Beans :: Mashed with a fork
  • Eggs :: Scrambled & Hard boiled
  • Greek Yogurt :: I think he may be allergic to it though, because he would go to the bathroom immediately upon eating yogurt {and not the good kind}
  • Peanut Butter :: We feed him peanut butter on a celery stick. He doesn’t really eat the celery, but he loves chewing on it
  • Almond Butter :: Served on apple ‘sticks’
  • Hummus :: We give him hummus on carrot sticks. Again, he doesn’t really eat the carrot sticks, but he chews on them

Coming soon

  • Asparagus
  • Artichoke
  • Potatoes
  • Zucchini
  • Spinach

In the future

  • Bananas
  • Pears
  • Blueberries

Favorite Feeding Time Items

  • Gathre Mat :: Babies make a mess when eating. This mat is so easy to clean and actually looks nice! And it’s so easy to fold up and carry with you if you want something to sit on outside.
  • Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair :: We love this chair. It’s cute and will grow with Cayson. It is expensive, but I know multiple people who have used it for multiple children. And it’s super easy to clean. We skipped buying the tray, since we pull Cayson straight up to the table with us.
  • Bibs :: These bibs catch everything that falls out of Cayson’s mouth- including his drool.
  • Spoons :: These are great for feeding Cayson, but he also loves simply chewing on these spoons.
  • Placemat :: These rubber mats are easy to clean and keep our wood table safe.
