Making a Difference

Katie with her adopted Uganda children

This week I began reading the book “Kisses from Katie” by Katie Davis and I have already been encouraged and inspired in so many ways. This book is about Katie, a young woman from Nashville, Tennessee who graduated high school as senior class president and homecoming queen and decided to forgo college and move to Uganda.

From page one I have been inspired. I am beginning to realize how great of an impact each individual can have in our world. Beth Clark stated that “people who really want to make a difference in the world usually do it, in one way or another.” And I have to agree with her. I like to think that almost every person is one of these people who yearns to make a difference, but what separates those who actually make a difference and those who don’t is nothing more than confidence- a confidence that they can succeed.

People who yearn to make a difference tend to truly care about people. They hold to the unshakable conviction that every individual is important and that each life matters. These individuals get excited about one smile, one fed stomach, one educated mind and one treated wound. Individuals recognize that making an impact does not happen all at once, but rather occurs over the time with small changes.

This is not to say that these individuals do not get frustrated along the way. They recognize that life is a journey. Once again, I am reverting back to my dads favorite quote:

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.

-Charles Swindoll
