If I Were Planning My Dream Trip to the Cotswolds
There are certain places that seem made for autumn, and the Cotswolds may be at the very top of my list. As fall grows near, I can’t help but plan my dream trip to the Cotswolds. I can’t help but imagine my boys running through the English countryside and walking on cobblestone paths while dressed in classic English layers.
In my dream trip, we would spend a few days in London and then at least five nights in the Cotswolds. I would chose one hotel as a home base, but would rent a car so we could explore the little villages.
Where I Would Love to Stay
Estelle Manor
I’ve had my eye on Estelle Manor for years. The historic manor, stunning interiors, expansive grounds, and family-friendly options make this a bucket list spot for me.
Dormy House
Dormy House is another location on my bucket list. Dormy House balances luxury and walkable charm in a way that seems straight out of a movie set.
THE PIG-in the Cotswolds
THE PIG-in the Cotswolds is housed in a 17th-century country house in the village of Barnsley and feels the most classic English pub-meets-garden aesthetic.
Soho Farmhouse
Soho Farmhouse is the ultimate playground for the kids, with horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, and a proper kids’ club built right into a rustic, 100-acre countryside escape.
Whatley Manor
Whatley Manor near Malmesbury feels like the quintessential English country house, with award-winning gardens and a spa that makes it as much a retreat for us as it is an adventure for the kids.
Ellenborough Park
Ellenborough Park is a 15th-century manor set on the Cheltenham Racecourse grounds, blending true stately-home history with the ease of a family pool and gardens to roam.
What I Would Do
Wander Through the Villages
There are a few villages I’ve bookmarked and can’t wait to get lost exploring: Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway, Burford, Bibury, and Castle Combe.
The goal would not be to rush through a checklist. I would rather choose one or two villages each day, arrive early, wander the side streets, stop for tea, browse antique shops, and let the boys explore. My boys both love historic buildings and exploring, so I know they would love this just as much as me!
Walk a Small Part of the Cotswold Way
I would pack proper boots and plan one beautiful countryside walk along a manageable section of the Cotswold Way.
I can already picture the boys running ahead, all of us bundled in layers, and then finding a cozy pub for lunch afterward. Those are often the moments I remember most from a trip… the simple ones that give us space to be together. Don’t you agree?
Visit Blenheim Palace
I would love to spend a day at Blenheim Palace! I want to explore the palace interiors and the surrounding parkland, especially with the trees changing color in the fall.
It feels like the perfect setting for family photographs, a long walk, and a glimpse into the history that makes this part of England so captivating.
Explore Antique Shops
I am always drawn to pieces that carry history and make a home feel collected rather than decorated all at once. I would love to visit as many antique shops as possible! Even if nothing came home with me, searching would be part of the fun. Although, realistically, I would probably spend the rest of the trip figuring out how to get at least one special find back to California.
Embrace English Country Life
Beyond exploring the villages, I would want to fully lean into the traditions and romance of English country life.
Ride Horses Through the Countryside
One of my biggest dreams would be to ride horses through the Cotswolds. I picture quiet bridleways, rolling green hills, old stone walls, and stopping somewhere beautiful for lunch afterward. My boys have never really ridden horses, so I would love to experience this with them!
Try Clay Pigeon Shooting
In high school I went Clay Pigeon shooting a few times, but it has been years. I would love to spend a morning clay pigeon shooting at a beautiful country estate. It feels like such a quintessentially English experience and the perfect reason to wear one of the tailored tweed jackets in my packing edit.
Have a Proper Afternoon Tea
No dream trip to England would be complete without afternoon tea. I make a pot of tea every day at home and would love to take my boys to a proper tea. I would choose somewhere elegant but warm, with beautiful china, fresh flowers, finger sandwiches, warm scones, and delicious pastries (which I know would be my boys favorite part).
Spend an Evening at a Historic Pub
At least one evening would be reserved for a cozy village pub. I picture a roaring fire, candlelight, traditional food, and everyone recounting their favorite moments from the day.
Falconry Experience
My boys saw a photo of someone with a falcon and this experience quickly was added on to their bucket list! I know nothing about it, but if it brings my boys joy and is something we can do as a family, I’m here for it!
What I Would Pack
My Cotswolds wardrobe would be built around pieces that feel polished, practical and a classic: waxed and quilted jackets, heritage checks, soft knits, beautiful denim, weather-ready boots, and accessories in warm shades of chocolate, olive, camel, and cream. I love a good classic look!
Everything would need to work together so I could dress for a countryside walk, lunch at a historic inn, or dinner at a beautiful hotel without bringing an enormous suitcase.
More than anything, I would want the tri (and the wardrobe) to feel timeless. The kind of experience we would still be talking about years later, when the boys are older and the photographs have become part of our family story.
For the Cotswolds in autumn, I would build around country texture and practical layers: waxed cotton, cashmere, riding-inspired boots, heritage checks, and one romantic piece for dinner.
The Packing Edit
The goal is a flexible edit that feels polished without becoming precious. These layers, textures, and timeless country pieces are designed to mix easily, photograph beautifully, and earn their place in a fall suitcase.

The Cotswolds has always looked so idyllic to me, but I have yet to prioritize a trip there. But this might be my sign I need to go next fall!
It’s been more than 20 years since I have visited the Cotswold but it was as charming as I thought it would be. I love the English country side and we are so overdue for a visit. I might have to add that to our next trip to London.

The Cotswolds is my favorite place in the world, even though I’ve never been there. There are a lot of places on my travel bucket list, but nothing is higher up that the Cotswolds for me.
These hotels all sound like such dreamy choices for a Cotswolds escape, but I especially love the idea of having one beautiful home base and using a car to explore the villages at your own pace!
Walking around those old villages during autumn has been on my travel list for a while. Cozy pub lunches after a long walk feel so relaxing.
