Monaco may be the second-smallest country in the world, but it’s overflowing with beauty, glamour, and charm. It’s a place I’ve wanted to visit for years and it was everything I expected it to be! Think sparkling marinas filled with yachts, manicured gardens, pastel buildings clinging to the cliffs, and a sense of elegance everywhere you turn. Whether you’re visiting for the day or staying overnight, Monaco is the perfect mix of luxury and old-world charm.
We loved wandering the streets here, soaking in the views, and finding spots where the boys could run and play while we admired the scenery. This guide will help you plan your time in this one-of-a-kind destination.
Itinerary
You could spend ample time here, but we only did a day trip here. I recommend planning your day around the attractions you’re most excited about — whether that’s touring the Prince’s Palace (if you want to see the changing of the guards plan your time accordingly) visit the Monte Carlo Casino, or simply intend to meander through the stunning gardens. Everything in Monaco is close together, so it’s easy to explore on foot.

Airport / Train Stations
✈ Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) – The nearest major airport, about 30 minutes away by car or train. You can also book a 7-minute helicopter ride for an unforgettable arrival.
🚆 Monaco–Monte Carlo Train Station – Conveniently located and connects easily to Nice, Menton, and Cannes.
Neighborhoods / Areas to Explore
- Casino Square (Place du Casino)
The heart of Monte Carlo’s glamour, with the famous Monte Carlo Casino, luxury hotels, and designer boutiques. Even if you don’t gamble, it’s worth visiting for the architecture and atmosphere. The boys loved the water feature in the center of the square — it was a perfect spot for them to play while we admired the elegant buildings and people-watching. - Monaco-Ville (The Old Town)
Perched on “The Rock,” this historic area is home to the Prince’s Palace, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, and charming narrow streets. There’s a large open square in front of the palace where the kids can run around, and the gardens here are gorgeous! We loved taking our time to stroll, explore, and enjoy the sweeping views over the harbor. - Oceanographic Museum & Rooftop Terrace
Part aquarium, part museum, and part hands-on learning experience — this is a hit for all ages. Inside, you’ll find fascinating marine life and exhibits; outside, the rooftop terrace offers stunning views and space for the kids to move around. There’s even a café for a snack break with a view. - Port Hercules
A beautiful marina filled with yachts, lined with cafés and restaurants. It’s a great spot for an evening stroll or a casual meal. The Yacht Club de Monaco is located here, and if you’re a member at a reciprocating yacht club, I highly recommend arranging a meal there — the food was incredible, and the people were so kind. - Larvotto Beach & Promenade
Monaco’s public beach with calm, shallow waters perfect for families. There’s a playground nearby, plus plenty of restaurants and ice cream shops along the promenade. Whether you go for a swim, play in the sand, or just enjoy a walk, it’s a great mid-day stop. - Japanese Garden
A peaceful retreat in the heart of Monaco, complete with koi ponds, little bridges, and winding paths. The boys enjoyed spotting the fish and exploring the garden’s hidden corners — it’s a quiet break from the busier parts of the city. - Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique)
Filled with cacti, succulents, and amazing sea views, this garden is both beautiful and adventurous. Some paths are steep, so it’s best for kids who enjoy walking and exploring. There’s also a small grotto tour that adds a little extra excitement. - Formula 1 Circuit Walk
Follow part of the famous Monaco Grand Prix route — the kids will love spotting the race markings, imagining the cars zipping by, and finding plaques along the way.

Transportation
🚆 Train – Easiest way to get in and out if you’re staying elsewhere on the Riviera.
🚕 Taxi / Ride Share – Handy for short hops, but Monaco is compact enough to walk most places.
🚶♀️ Walk – My favorite way to see Monaco! Expect some hills, but everything is close together and beautifully scenic.
Top Things to See & Do in Monaco
- Prince’s Palace of Monaco – Tour the State Apartments and watch the changing of the guard.
- Monte Carlo Casino – Iconic and opulent — entry requirements vary, so check ahead. We enjoyed simply seeing it from the square
- Saint Nicholas Cathedral – Beautiful white-stone church where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace are buried.
- Oceanographic Museum – Fascinating for kids and adults, with aquariums and marine exhibits.
- Japanese Garden – Peaceful retreat with koi ponds and traditional landscaping.
- Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique) – Filled with cacti and succulents, with incredible city and sea views.
- Formula 1 Circuit Walk – Follow part of the famous Monaco Grand Prix route.

Amazing photos. So impressed with those dapper boys.
The views alone look unreal, but I love that you included simple things too — like walking around the harbour and people-watching. Also, I didn’t realise how close everything is, which makes it feel way more doable. Definitely saving this for my dream Euro trip!
