What to do in the French Riviera with Kids

There’s something about the French Riviera that feels almost magical with children. It’s beautiful, yes. But it’s also surprisingly easy, slow-paced, and full of simple moments that end up becoming the ones you remember most.

Think slow mornings savoring fresh croissants, strolls along the beach, afternoons wandering cobblestone streets with gelato in hand, and evenings lingering over dinner.

What I love most is that you don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy it. The Riviera is best experienced slowly. A morning market here, a seaside lunch there, a spontaneous stop for pastries… and somehow, the days feel full without ever feeling rushed.

If you’re traveling with kids (we did it with our 4 & 7 year olds), the French Riviera is one of those places where you can truly enjoy the destination just as much as they do!

Itinerary

Rather than setting an itinerary for you, I recommend lining up your schedule based on where you choose to stay and the experiences you want to do (farmers markets, events, etc).

The beauty of the French Riviera is how close everything is. You can stay in one home base and explore a new town each day without ever feeling overwhelmed.

Below I’ve listed my favorite cities and recommendations so you can build a trip that feels natural for your family.

Airport/Train Stations

  • Nice Airport is the largest, most centralized airport in the South of France
  • Almost every city has a train station, so it’s extremely easy to get around

Cities (these are cities we loved, in alphabetical order)

  • Cannes
    Famous for its film festival, but also a very walkable and family-friendly beach town. The sandy beaches here are a big plus if you’re traveling with kids.
  • Eze
    A quiet, storybook hilltop village with the most incredible views. It’s not stroller-friendly, but older kids will love exploring the winding streets and feeling like they’ve stepped into another time.
  • Menton
    One of the most colorful towns on the Riviera, located near the Italian border. It feels a bit quieter and slower, which can be perfect with kids.
  • Monaco
    Clean, safe, and surprisingly fascinating for children. From watching the guards at the palace to spotting yachts in the harbor, there’s a lot to take in.
  • Nice
    A great home base. There’s a mix of beaches, parks, markets, and wide walking paths along the Promenade des Anglais that make it very easy with kids.
  • Saint Tropez
    A bit more of a drive, but worth it if you want that iconic Riviera feel. Beach clubs during the day can be surprisingly family-friendly.
  • Villefranche sur Mer
    One of my absolute favorites with kids! The beach is calm, the town is charming, and everything feels very walkable and relaxed.

Transportation

  • Train {very easy to use!}
  • Taxi
  • Walk {my favorite way to see any city}
  • Car {I personally wouldn’t bother renting a car, unless you intend to go inland to a more remote location}

Recommendations

Things to Know

  • Most beaches are rocky, not sandy. You may want to bring water shoes!
  • Strollers can be tricky, as there are many stairs and cobblestones.
  • It’s very safe! We loved how safe we felt everywhere.
  • Meals are slow- in the best way possible. We packed these to help keep our boys entertained at the table.
  • I would recommend no fewer than 4 days in the French Riviera, but I could personally spend the entire summer there easily!

Did I miss anything?

    This post beautifully captures the French Riviera through a family lens, showing that beyond the glamour, it’s a playground of color, culture, and simple joys that kids can truly enjoy. I love how it highlights destinations like Nice with its incredible playgrounds and easy walkability, making it clear that the Riviera isn’t just for luxury travelers but for families seeking both adventure and ease. It reads like a sun-soaked invitation to explore at a child’s pace, where every beach, market, and seaside stroll becomes part of a shared family story. jerry http://www.fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com

    The idea of mixing beach time with simple activities like old town walks in the itinerary should be explored. It feels balanced.
