How to Have a Parisian Picnic at Home

Is there anything better than a Parisian picnic? Picture yourself sitting along the Seine or beneath the Eiffel Tower, enjoying simple yet delicious nibble. Picnics in Paris are my favorite and since it isn’t realistic to pop over to Paris on a whim, I sometimes like to recreate our Parisian picnics at home. Here’s how to have a Parisian picnic at home.

1. Location: Find Your Own “Jardin”

Paris is full of iconic picnic spots, but sometimes somewhere local can be just as magical. Look for a spot that offers shade, some greenery, and maybe even a bit of people watching. Ideally, I like to bring along a blanket or even a lightweight, classic French tablecloth to lay on the ground.

2. The Essentials: Curate a Simple Yet Sophisticated Menu

A Paris-inspired picnic is all about quality over quantity. Focus on fresh ingredients and artisanal treats to elevate the experience.

  • French Bread & Cheese: A crusty baguette is non-negotiable for any French picnic. Pair it with a selection of cheeses like Brie, Camembert, and Roquefort for that authentic Parisian touch. I personally like to do one soft cheese, one hard cheese and one stinky cheese.
  • Charcuterie: Thin slices of prosciutto, salami, or pâté make for an elegant and savory addition. Don’t forget the cornichons, those tiny French pickles that provide the perfect tangy balance.
  • Fresh Fruit: Simple, seasonal fruits like grapes, strawberries, and pears offer a refreshing contrast to the richness of the cheese and charcuterie.
  • Pastries & Sweets: Finish off your picnic with some quintessential French desserts. Macarons, Madeleines, tarte aux framboises, or a buttery croissant will add a sweet, Parisian nod.
  • French Wine or Sparkling Water: No Paris-inspired picnic would be complete without a glass of wine. I’m a fan of either a rosé from Provence or a bottle of Champagne. And don’t forget to bring water {maybe even sparkling water} to hydrate!

3. Pack Like a Parisian

The French have a way of making everything feel stylish—even packing for a picnic. If possible, opt for reusable (instead of disposable) options to keep things elegant and environmentally conscious. Here are a few must-haves:

  • A Cute Basket: Classic and chic, a wicker basket adds a vintage touch to your picnic. It’s functional too, keeping everything organized and easy to carry.
  • Cloth Napkins: Swap out paper napkins for linen or cotton ones. They’re more sustainable, and they add a touch of sophistication.
  • Glassware & Real Plates: If you want to go the extra mile, bring real glassware for your wine or water, a wood serving platter, and small plates for the food. This little touch can make your picnic feel extra special!

4. The Atmosphere: French Tunes & Florals

To truly transport yourself to Paris, create a delightful atmosphere. Bring along a small portable speaker to play classic French tunes—think Edith Piaf or Charles Aznavour—or a playlist filled with soft jazz to set the mood.

I also like to pick up a small bouquet of flowers, like peonies or lavender, from the market. Fresh flowers always elevate a dining space. Simply place lay them on your blanket or place them in a small vase to create a little centerpiece for your picnic setup.

5. Dress the Part

Embrace the effortless style of Parisians with your picnic attire. Think of comfortable yet chic outfits like a flowy dress, a striped top, or an oversized button down top. Don’t forget your sunglasses and maybe a stylish sunhat!

6. Relax & Enjoy the Moment

The key to a perfect Paris-inspired picnic is to slow down and enjoy the experience. Take time to savor each bite, enjoy the conversation, and immerse yourself in the beautiful surroundings. Whether you’re solo, with a partner, or gathering friends and family, a Parisian picnic is all about appreciating life’s simple pleasures!
