When you think of vacation, I’m guessing either a beach or a handful of big cities come to your mind- am I right? There are a plethora of big cities that just about everyone should have on their bucket list. Sure, they may be touristy, but they are touristy for a reason! A while ago I shared my 5 favorite small cities around the world and today I am sharing my 5 favorite big cities! These are cities that should absolutely be on your must-visit list!
You can find some of my other travel tips, suggestions & favorites here!
1.) Amsterdam
Amsterdam surprised me in the best way possible. I had few expectations when we visited Amsterdam, but was instantly taken with the gorgeous architecture and plethora of tulips- even though it was freezing outside still. We are already dreaming of our return when it is a bit warmer! But really, I think it is probably just a fun city year round!
2.) London
Confession- I didn’t like London the first 4 times I visited it. But the 5th time I fell in love. I think taking the hop-on-hop-off tour really helped me to figure out the city and once I felt more confident in our directions, I finally had the chance to soak in the gorgeous, historic city. There really is so much to do and see in London. Pro tip- if you’re flying to Europe and have a layover in London, look for a long layover (at least 1 night) so you can enjoy the city!

3.) New York City
I love love love NYC. I really can’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s a must-visit city for a reason. From the history and shopping to the museums and food- there really is something for everyone. It’s one of those cities people continue returning to see because it is always changing and each season is so different. The only months I recommend not visiting are January, February and early March- although, you will have fewer tourists those months!

4.) Paris
If I could spend 6 months in Paris and 6 months in NYC I would. My parents brought me to Paris in 6th grade and I have yearned to live there ever since.I adore the architecture, food, history and general atmosphere. Personally, I’ve found the French to be nothing but kind {granted I truly try to speak the language and do my best to embrace the culture- if you just expect them to speak English without even trying some French, they probably won’t be as friendly}. This city is gorgeous year round and absolutely MUST be on your bucket list!
5.) Venice
Venice is smaller than I remembered, but it is even more beautiful than I remembered. We spent our days meandering the narrow streets, eating gelato, sipping wine and cruising the canals. I love that the streets are for pedestrians only. It is such a picturesque city and the food is absolutely incredible!! It’s one of those cities we will definitely be returning to!
What are your favorite big cities?
I love this list (although I haven’t been to Venice). I agree that London had to grow on me. And I could live in Paris!
I love your list! All romantic and hope I could visit them all soon! Where is your next destination?
Let’s plan a trip to all 5. Would love to see the world through my grandsons eyes.
I live in one, London, and spend nearly half the year in Veneto! These are great cities for all the reasons listed. I actually never liked NYC for many visits, but really enjoyed it on my last recent trip, how funny!
I have been to all of them except Venice. I actually love all them. I can’t choose because every city has his charms :)
Love all of the pictures. Paris is my dream city. I will plan a trip Paris with my daughters.
All five are great choices, and favourites for me too. I live in London so probably don’t appreciate it enough, but that’s always the way. Just went back to Venice this year after a long absence. Still love it!
I am not a fan of big cities to be honest (even though I live in one, or perhaps BECAUSE I live in one) but if I were to pick my 5 favourite, these would probably be it! I loved Amsterdam the moment I stepped foot in it (the view from the plane added to it I think), the architecture, the vibe, the people, the canals, the fact that people were cycling to work etc. I also loved Venice despite a lot of people saying its overrated and dirty! I loved NYC so much that I am really keen on going back sometime, I’ve been there only once and it just wasn’t enough. London was the first ever big city I visited (outside my home town) so that holds a special place in my heart. Love your choices :)
This is also my top 5 favorite cities especially Paris. It is actually our favorite destination and whenever we are there, I can’t help be really happy. Can’t wait to be back this November.
London is close to my heart and I love the city…
Somehow Paris wasn’t as fascinating to me as I thought it would be. Perhaps I had too much expectation from the city.
I’m yet to visit the USA, but I don’t have immediate plans though. Let’s see!
I’m from Cornwall and I love when I find posts of people talking wonders about this country. It really fill us with joy knowing somebody enjoys it so much visiting this places.
Thank you very much for this amazing article.
